Meet Russell, one of our Melbourne Partners. Russell is one of only six accredited specialists in tax law in Victoria, as well as being a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor. He has over 20 years of experience across both public and private sectors.
Why did you become a lawyer? I originally studied law because I saw it as a good, versatile degree, although my path to practising was not especially direct. I started out in property law, quickly realised it was not the right fit, then spent time at the ATO and became a chartered accountant. That experience eventually led me to tax and commercial law, where the mix of legal analysis, commercial problem-solving and numbers suited me. I have since built my practice around helping clients navigate complex commercial issues, like tax and structuring, in a practical way. Why Moray & Agnew? I was attracted to Moray & Agnew because I wanted to move back into a pure law firm environment. Having worked in multi-disciplinary firms with accountants, financial planners and lawyers, I felt that a focused legal practice was the best setting for servicing my clients’ needs, particularly in the type of work that I enjoyed. Moray & Agnew’s great people, national reach, strong growth and challenger-firm mindset also made it a very appealing move. What do you enjoy outside work? Outside work, I am usually planning the next trip, trying a new whisky, watching horror movies with my daughter, or pretending that being a retired drummer still counts as a musical career. I also spend a fair bit of time watching my son display his frankly unreasonable soccer skills, and catching up with friends and family, all useful reminders that there are interests in life that do not involve tax. Three words that sum you up Considered. Clear. Commercial.
