Matthew is a workplace lawyer with 10 years’ experience advising employers on all aspects of the employment relationship, industrial relations and work health and safety.

EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

He acts for employers in both the private and public sectors, with particular experience in the banking, finance and insurance sectors.

He regularly advises clients on complex employment issues involving the interpretation of federal and state workplace legislation, collective bargaining, individual and collective disputes, investigations, business restructuring, remuneration and disciplinary matters.

Prior to joining Moray & Agnew, Matthew was in-house counsel and a business strategy advisor for a large customer-owned bank. This mix of experience allows Matthew to engage meaningfully with clients on their broader strategic goals and provide advice and support that complements clients’ commercial objectives.

Matthew takes a practical approach and works closely with senior executives, managers and internal decision-makers on the development and implementation of commercial legal strategies that ensure compliance with applicable laws and effectively manage risk.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Matthew is an experienced litigator who has had significant success defending employer clients in complex and significant matters in the Fair Work Commission, NSW Industrial Relations Commission and state and federal courts. In particular, he acted for a state government department in defence of an unfair dismissal claim brought by an employee following a serious safety incident.

He also has particular expertise advising on business restructuring, remuneration and workplace regulatory issues in the banking sector. For example, Matthew has previously advised a large customer owned bank on various executive remuneration and business structuring matters, including in preparation for the introduction of the Banking Executive Accountability Regime.
