John Deegan

John is a Special Counsel in our Commercial Litigation & Disputes Team.

He has more than 10 years’ experience as a litigation lawyer representing insurers, corporations, professionals, government authorities and commercial clients in complex commercial disputes.

Experience & expertise

John has expertise across general liability, professional indemnity, policy interpretation, and general commercial litigation matters in the District, Supreme, Federal and appellate courts. He is recognised for providing strategic legal advice, managing high-value and complex litigation, achieving commercial outcomes for clients, and mentoring junior practitioners.

Work highlights

• Assisting a NSW statutory sporting regulator in significant competition law and preliminary discovery proceedings against other interstate regulators
• Representing national and international insurers on a variety of general liability claims, including complex personal injury, property damage and product liability exposures
• Advising head contractors and subcontractors in construction site injury litigation involving multiple defendants, contractual disputes, and competing insurance issues.
• Acting both for and against government statutory authorities in recovery actions involving critical infrastructure damage
• Defending a principal certifying authorities in complex building defect proceedings involving allegations of breaches of duty under the Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 (NSW)
• Acting for Lawcover insureds in professional negligence claims, including matters involving alleged breaches of fiduciary duties and bankruptcy-related disputes.
