Caryn is an experienced litigator, specialising in complex insurance and personal injury claims, particularly State government and medical negligence litigation.

Caryn joined the Sydney office of Moray & Agnew in October 2021. As a member of the general insurance team, Caryn acts for insurers and government departments, as well as individuals and families, in cases of varying financial value in the areas of personal injury, public liability, medical negligence, historical abuse, intentional tort, property damage, and coronial inquests. Her experience includes acting in several multi-million dollar cases and in claims involving multinational corporate entities.

She specialises in cases across the intermediate, Supreme and appellate courts of New South Wales and other states. Her experience includes numerous coronial inquests.

Caryn's expertise draws on her prior experience in a top tier Sydney firm acting in product liability, workplace relations, banking and finance and general commercial litigation. Thereafter, Caryn worked in a boutique firm, where she honed her medical negligence skills, a national mid-tier firm where she worked exclusively in medical negligence litigation, and most recently before joining Moray & Agnew, a boutique firm where she worked on a variety of State government claims, whilst maintaining her medical negligence practice.

Caryn has worked extensively with government agencies, and is very familiar with the sensitivities that can accompany government work, and the publicity it sometimes attracts. Caryn has twice undertaken secondments with State government departments, such that she has had the opportunity to embed herself with her clients, and become familiar with their systems and culture.

Caryn has consistently achieved favourable outcomes for her clients by delving into the detail of each matter, and giving early and strategically sound advice to clients as to the best way forward. She has represented clients at many alternative dispute resolution conferences, and is well versed in mediation process and strategy. Caryn has either won at trial, or successfully negotiated settlement in almost all matters in which she has acted throughout her career.

Caryn takes an efficient and detail-oriented approach to her work. She gets to know the individuals involved in her cases and identifies the key issues early. As a result, she regularly achieves early settlement of matters, often before they are litigated.

In 2009, Caryn handled a claim for faulty tyre manufacturing, which resulted in the deaths of two truck drivers. Caryn attended the 8-week coronial inquest into the deaths of the drivers, and handled the compensation claims which were later filed in the Supreme Court. Caryn developed a sound understanding of the evidence, and strengths and weaknesses of each case, and they were each settled at mediation.

Caryn has extensive experience in presenting to legal seminars, having presented on many occasions to colleagues in the legal profession and health care providers. She has written articles which have been published in legal journals on several occasions and has been regularly quoted in or interviewed by the media for her expertise in litigation and particularly in medical negligence.
