Biography
Michael is the Chairman and National Managing Partner of Moray & Agnew, a national insurance, commercial and workplace relations law firm, with over 300 personnel operating in five offices.
Michael became a Partner in 1971 after completing his articles with Sydney H Moray and has been with the firm ever since. He has over 38 years' experience in the insurance industry and an in-depth knowledge of the firm.
Prior to assuming a full-time management position in 2003, Michael successfully led Moray & Agnew's thriving workers compensation practice, Australia's largest. Well recognised as an outstanding litigator, he was involved in a number of precedent setting cases before the Privy Council and the High Court of Australia, involving the interpretation of legislation regarding employment issues.
Michael played a pivotal role in the continued growth and success of the firm. In 2008 Australasian Legal Business (ALB) Magazine ranked Michael a 'Top 10 Leader' in the 'ALB Hot 40' survey. The survey recognised: 'Pitt has presided over strong growth at Moray & Agnew in the face of difficult conditions which have included tort reform and reduced litigation. Far from lying low however, the firm has instead gone into expansion mode'.
The same publication also ranked Moray & Agnew as the 'second fastest growing law firm in the region'. Chambers & Partners Asia (2009 edition) noted: 'Specialist insurance firm Moray & Agnew has grown dramatically. This has not gone unnoticed by the industry'.
Michael has been interviewed in and quoted by various publications, ranging from The Australian Financial Review (AFR), The Australian to ALB Magazine.
The Australian wrote about Moray & Agnew as one of the firms at which women lawyers performed most strongly (July 2009) and Michael's role in formulating the firm's approach to help women manage their career and family commitments.
In August 2007 in an interview with the AFR, Michael revealed details of Moray & Agnew's unique approach to servicing insurance clients who were 'flexing their muscles' in order to gain greater services from law firms. Entitled: 'Clients apply pressure for IT updates', Michael discussed how the firm changed the economics of managing and servicing its insurance clients through being the first firm to adopt and invest in new multi-million dollar cutting edge practice management IT systems.
Traditionally a specialist insurance firm, under Michael's leadership, the firm has since established highly regarded corporate, commercial, workplace relations and building & construction practices, in order to address a broader range of clients' requirements.
He led the consolidation and national integration of Moray & Agnew's five offices. Established in Sydney in 1948, Moray & Agnew opened its first interstate office in 2000 in Brisbane, closely followed by Canberra, Melbourne and Newcastle.
Michael has earned a reputation as a confident strategic leader and is well respected by his fellow partners, staff, clients and peers. His solid management skills, strong business acumen, dedication and drive provide the ingredients for the future success of Moray & Agnew.
